Project Overview

Problem Definition

The visually impaired are unable to perform most of their daily activities by themselves without relying on other people via phone or in person.

Proposed solution

Enabled is an AR-assisted navigation experience (Augmented Reality) with a speech-on-command and an inbuilt magnifier feature for legally or fully blind people to assist them in navigating and performing their daily activities. It will help the users to perform their day-to-day tasks such as taking the right bus, placing an order in a restaurant, etc, by themselves and by not seeking the help of anyone via call or in person.

Research

Survey Outcomes

The first stage of research was by conducting a quick survey. The participants included both low visioned and blind people.

84% of the participants have not seen anything similar to the proposed idea.

71% of the participants use Google Maps to navigate but find it unsatisfactory.

Survey Takeaways

  • People with minor vision problems could use it at night.

  • People with nieces, nephews, other relatives, or friends who struggle with vision problems could be helped.

  • People who have extreme short sight or far sight who prefer to not wear thick glasses while partying and are scared of wearing lenses or surgery could be potential users of the product.

User Definition

Personas

The targeted audience for Enabled would be people who fall in the low-visioned to fully blind spectrum. The below personas (Arlene -fully blind, and Ethan - low visioned) have been put together with the interviews and surveys carried out.

User Flow

After numerous testing and feedback, we altered the user flow of the app,
so it would be a better experience for all users.

Scenario: Ethan wishes to go to his friend's son's first b'day party. His friend has asked him to meet at STC, ON where then they could go together to the venue. Ethan was introduced to Enabled by one of his rehab coaches and decides to give it a try this time.

Wireframes

The next step was to do a
lo-fi wireframe using the new user flow created. Here I have quickly incorporated my brainstorming ideas roughly, and outlined the user flow of Ethan, a low visioned user.
